Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General (AG), Martin A.B. Amidu, has counter-responded to former Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr. Valerie Sawyerr’s criticisms against him, describing the latter’s vituperations as “drunken-like diatribes.”
Mr. Amidu, who sounded unfazed in his latest epistle to the media yesterday in Accra, said he would stop at nothing to speak his mind about the rot in society.
This, he said, would include criticising the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in defence of the 1992 Constitution and the public purse.
Dr. Sawyerr in an article on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 took a swipe at former President Jerry John Rawlings and Mr. Amidu, in which article he subsequently described the former Attorney General as pompous.
In her opinion, the pomposity of Mr. Amidu, if not checked, will eventually consume him (Martin Amidu).
Her attack on Mr. Amidu was in reaction to an earlier article written by the former AG in which he chastised the NDC for the chaos at the Electoral Commission (EC).
Mr. Amidu in the said article also alleged that the Mahama administration appointed Mrs. Charlotte Osei as Chairperson of the EC to help the NDC rig the 2016 elections.
But, Dr. Sawyerr, who did not take it kindly with Mr. Amidu’s allegations, went haywire, attacking the personality of the man known in political circles as ‘Citizen Vigilante.’
According to her, he had advised Mr. Amidu in the past that his “over-bloated ego and sense of self-importance” will be his “Achilles heel.”
“… and what is Comrade Martin Amidu also babbling about? Martin, did I not tell you that your pomposity, over-bloated ego and sense of self-importance constitute your Achilles heel? Remember, when I told you (years ago) after a presidential press conference, that a directive had been issued that no appointee should grant a press interview in order to avoid any contradictory statements on air … and you screeched … ‘who are you … small girl like you … where were you when I was Attorney General’ etc., etc? Remember I told you that it is your Achilles heel that would destroy you?
“Barely a week or so after that, you were relieved of your post as Attorney-General after attempting to assault a sitting Head of State? Since then you have become a so-called crusader, sinking lower and lower in the NDC as you seem to rise higher and higher in the NPP. I am not a soothsayer, neither am I a harbinger of gloom and doom … but once again I say to you … this time with a nation full of witnesses … that your Achilles heel will destroy you!
“Respectfully Martin, cut the crap! You have achieved your aim … the NDC is in Opposition. I challenge you to resign from the NDC since you no longer promote the cause of the NDC. Or do you also subscribe to the agenda to destroy to take over? The agenda that is based on the premise that it is easier to take over the NDC when it is in Opposition!”, Dr. Sawyerr was reported to have made these observations in her article.
But Mr. Amidu, who since 2012 has become a thorn in the flesh of his own party in his counter-response, said Dr. Sawyerr’s comments against himself and former President Jerry John Rawlings were disjointed, incoherent and drunken-like lies.
“Clearly the John Mahama faction, their surrogates like Valerie Sawyerr … within the NDC think they can frighten core NDC members like myself with threats of disciplinary action.”
“I will rather defend the 1992 Constitution than be intimidated by John Mahama, Woyome, and their surrogates….
“Let those who oppose the fight against corruption in the NDC and who also dislike probity and accountability which I stand for with former President Rawlings do their worst. It is for that integrity that on 31st December, 2016, I was chosen by the founder to light the perpetual flame for the fallen heroes of the 31st December Revolution. I cannot betray that cause and the 1992 Constitution out of which the NDC was born,” Mr. Amidu wrote.
Meanwhile, two members of NDC, Evans Amankwah and Abigail Elorm Mensah, have petitioned the General Secretary of the party under Article 45 of the NDC Constitution to take disciplinary action against Mr. Amidu, pursuant to Article 47 of the same constitution.
